What a child eats in the first two years of life may echo for decades, according to a large study that used an accident of history — the end of Britain’s postwar sugar rationing — to test the idea.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge followed more than 64,000 people born in Britain between 1951 and 1956 using the UK Biobank. Because sugar rationing ended in September 1953, children born just months apart had very different sugar exposure during the critical first 1,000 days (conception to age 2) — a natural experiment. Those with more rationing (less sugar) early in life had lower rates of several cancers (including a 36% lower breast-cancer rate and a 69% lower liver-cancer rate in the analysis), longer telomeres (a marker of biological aging, equivalent to ~2.2 years slower aging), and at age 50 tended to eat less sugar and healthier diets. The findings were published in PNAS.

Association, not proof

This is a natural experiment, not a randomized trial — it shows strong associations but cannot definitively prove causation. The researchers propose two plausible mechanisms — a biological one (early metabolic and immune development) and a behavioral one (early taste preferences shaping lifelong diet) — but their relative contributions are unclear.

Why it matters

The study adds weight to the idea that the earliest years are a uniquely influential window for lifelong health, and that limiting added sugar in infancy may pay dividends far later.
