The FDA has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines for the 2026–27 season from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax (with Sanofi), refreshed to target the currently dominant strain.
The updated shots are designed against the XFG variant — nicknamed “Stratus” — which accounted for an estimated 79% of recent US COVID-19 cases. Pfizer’s and Moderna’s vaccines use mRNA technology; Novavax’s is a protein-based shot.
Narrower eligibility this year
Notably, this season’s approvals came with more restricted eligibility than in prior years. Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine, for example, was approved for all adults 65 and older, plus people aged 5–64 who have a condition that raises their risk of severe illness — rather than a blanket recommendation for everyone.
