The quality of your sleep in midlife might carry an early hint about Alzheimer’s risk — specifically, how often your brain briefly stirs during the night.
Researchers at the University of Liège studied sleep in over 500 healthy participants — mostly ages 18–31, plus an older group aged 50–69 — and compared their sleep patterns with polygenic risk scores for Alzheimer’s. They found that frequent “micro-awakenings” — brief bursts of brain activity that don’t cause full wakefulness — were associated with higher genetic Alzheimer’s risk in the middle-aged group (but not the younger one). The work was published in the journal Sleep.
A brainstem link
The researchers point to the locus coeruleus — a rice-grain-sized brainstem region that regulates wakefulness and attention. Sleep-quality measures correlated with this region’s condition and its role in REM sleep, which supports memory. Poor locus coeruleus function, they suggest, could promote the buildup of Alzheimer’s-related proteins — offering a possible mechanism linking disrupted sleep and disease risk.
Why it matters — and big caveats
Sleep is modifiable, so a genuine link would be encouraging — but this study shows statistical associations, not proof. The genetic risk it measured was low and cannot predict whether any individual will develop Alzheimer’s, and the association appeared in only one age group. More research is needed to confirm it.
